What to Expect From Your First Tarot Reading (And Why It Might Change Everything)

By Aimee Friedrich — Black Salt Tarot

So you've been thinking about getting a tarot reading. Maybe a friend swears by them. Maybe you've seen something on Instagram that made you pause. Maybe life has thrown you into a situation where you just need some clarity and nothing else seems to be giving it to you.

Whatever brought you here — you're in the right place.

First tarot readings come with a lot of questions. Will it be accurate? Do I have to believe in anything specific? What if I hear something I don't want to hear? These are completely normal thoughts, and I want to answer all of them honestly — because that's exactly how I read.

Let's walk through everything you need to know before your first session.

You Don't Have to "Believe" in Anything

This is the first thing I tell every new client.

You don't need to be spiritual, religious, or even sure that tarot "works." What you do need is an open mind and a genuine desire for clarity. That's it.

Tarot is a tool for reflection. The cards don't predict a fixed future — they reveal the energy, patterns, and possibilities that are already present in your situation. Think of it less like a crystal ball and more like a mirror that shows you things you already sense but haven't been able to articulate.

Some people come to their first reading as complete sceptics and leave saying it was one of the most useful conversations they've ever had. Others come already deeply connected to spirituality and find the reading affirms and deepens what they already know. Both experiences are completely valid.

What Happens in a Reading

Every reader has their own style, and mine is intuitive, honest, and grounded.

Here's what a typical session with me looks like:

Before we start, I'll ask if you have a specific question or situation you'd like to focus on, or whether you'd prefer an open general reading. Both work beautifully — there's no wrong approach.

During the reading, I tune into your energy and lay out a spread of cards that speaks to your situation. I don't just recite textbook meanings — I channel what I'm genuinely picking up from your energy combined with what the cards are showing me. This is where it tends to get specific and sometimes a little uncanny.

I'll be honest with you. If the cards are showing me something difficult — a relationship that isn't serving you, a decision you've been avoiding, a pattern you keep repeating — I will tell you. Not to be harsh, but because real clarity is the only kind that actually helps. I won't dress things up in ways that leave you more confused than when you arrived.

You're welcome to ask questions at any point throughout the reading. This isn't a one-way performance — it's a conversation.

At the end, we'll talk about the key messages and what practical steps or shifts might support you moving forward.

What to Do Before Your Reading

A little preparation goes a long way.

Think about what you most need clarity on. You don't need to have a perfectly worded question, but having a sense of the area of your life you most want to explore — love, career, a specific decision, your overall direction — helps focus the energy of the reading.

Come as you are. You don't need to be in a particular emotional state, meditate beforehand, or do anything special. Just show up.

Give yourself some quiet time before and after. If you can avoid rushing straight into your reading from a hectic meeting or immediately back into a busy day, the insights tend to land more deeply.

Have something to take notes with. Readings can cover a lot of ground, and it's common to remember something important a few days later. I record all Zoom sessions so you can revisit them, but having a notebook nearby is always helpful.

What Tarot Can — and Can't — Tell You

It's important to be honest about this.

Tarot is incredibly powerful for gaining clarity on where you are right now, understanding the energies and patterns around a situation, seeing potential outcomes based on your current path, reconnecting with your own intuition, and processing big life transitions and decisions.

What tarot isn't is a guarantee. The future isn't fixed — your choices, actions, and energy all influence how things unfold. A reading gives you insight and clarity, not a script to follow passively. The most powerful readings I give are the ones where a client walks away feeling more empowered to make their own decisions, not more dependent on external validation.

I also want to be clear: tarot readings are for guidance and insight only and are not a replacement for professional legal, medical, or mental health advice.

Common Questions I Get Asked

"What if I hear something bad?"

This comes up a lot. Here's the truth — in my experience, there are no "bad" cards, only cards that reveal things we need to see. The Tower card might look alarming, but it often signals a necessary change that ultimately leads somewhere much better. I read with compassion and always focus on what you can do with the information, not just what the cards show.

"Can you read for someone else in my life?"

Yes and no. I can look at the energy of a relationship or situation involving another person, but I read from your perspective and your energy — not as a way to spy on or judge someone else. The reading is always centred on what's useful and empowering for you.

"Does it matter if we do it online vs in person?"

Not at all. Energy doesn't have physical boundaries. Some of my most powerful readings have been done over Zoom with clients on the other side of the country. What matters is the connection and the intention — not the geography.

"How often should I get a reading?"

There's no set rule. Some people come once and get everything they needed. Others come monthly as part of their regular self-reflection practice. I'd suggest letting your intuition guide you — if something significant is shifting in your life and you'd benefit from clarity, that's a good time for a reading.
